During this week in August 1940,  Camp Custer in Michigan is designated Fort Custer and becomes a permanent military base. It was constructed near Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1917 as a training camp for newly enlisted and drafted U.S. Army troops, who would eventually ship out to Europe to fight in World War I.
