SEPT 1: ‘Following the Guidon’

In its Sunday, Aug. 31, 1890 issue, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle publishes under the heading “Current Literature” a note about Elizabeth Custer’s newest book, “Following the Guidon.”

The reviewer writes: “It is not only excellently and gracefully written and full of information about the soldier and his hitherto natural enemies, the aborigines of the content… The main text is about General Custer’s Kansas and Indian territory operations in 1868, and includes both war scenes and hunting scenes…”

Libbie Custer wrote four books during her lifetime: Boots and Saddles (1885), Tenting on the Plains (1887), Following the Guidon (1890) and The Boy General (1901.)
