On Dec. 19, 1863, Brig. General of Volunteers George A. Custer writes to an unidentified friend secretly announcing his engagement to Elizabeth Clift Bacon. Custer stated his plan to return to Monroe, Michigan, in February 1864 β€œfor the purpose of getting married. Libbie Bacon is the fortunate or unfortunate person, whichever it will be, who will unite her destinies with mine.”

The two were officially introduced at a holiday party in Monroe in November.
