NOV 12: Custer Presents Captured Rebel Flags

In its Nov. 12, 1864 issue, Harper’s Weekly publishes a cover illustration depicting Maj. General George A. Custer presenting a collection of captured Confederate battle flags to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton at the War Department in Washington, D.C. Many of the flags were captured in late October at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia, a critical victory for the Union.
