DEC 25: Fort Smith Construction Begins

On Dec. 25, 1817, construction begins on a frontier military post known as Fort Smith in what is now Arkansas.

Fort Smith was strategically important as a westernmost post on the Arkansas River, playing a role in maintaining peace between Native American tribes and later as a base for law enforcement in the Indian Territory
