NOV 4: Custer Moves Cavalry to Austin

On Nov. 4, 1865, Maj. General George A. Custer, accompanied by his wife, Libbie, leads the 2nd Division of Cavalry of the Military Division of the Gulf to their new post at Austin, Texas. Custer and the division, stocked with five regiments of veteran western theater cavalrymen, departed from Hempstead, Texas, on Oct. 27. Custer became Chief of the Cavalry of the Department of Texas.
